The Marine Corps has authorized a program for payment of Assignment Incentive Pay (AIP) to Marines who, as a result of an involuntary extension of a unit deployment, agree to extend their enlistment or reenlistment to complete the deployment.
According to MARSADMIN 108/07, effective February 16, Marines who agree to extend their Expiration of Active Service (EAS) to complete an extension of a scheduled deployment will be eligible to receive $500 of AIP for every month of EAS extension.
Eligibility Requirements
a. Must have less than 12 months of active service remaining on an existing enlistment/reenlistment.
b. Must agree to remain with their current unit to complete the extended deployment.
AIP Authorization Requirements
Marines will sign a written agreement. The below written agreement will be maintained in the command's unit files for the duration of the AIP period:
"I, [RANK, LAST NAME, FI, MI, L4-SSN]UNDERSTAND THAT, INCIDENT TO THE EXTENSION OF MY ENLISTMENT/REENLISTMENT ON OR PRIOR TO MY EAS DATE FOR A PERIOD OF [FULL MONTHS], I WILL BE PAID ASSIGNMENT INCENTIVE PAY (AIP) IN THE AMOUNT OF $500 PER MONTH FOR EACH FULL MONTH MY EAS DATE IS EXTENDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPLETING THE DEPLOYMENT OF MY UNIT INVOLUNTARILY EXTENDED IN SUPPORT OF OIF/OEF OR OTHER GWOT MISSION, EFFECTIVE THE DATE OF THIS AGREEMENT. FAILURE TO COMPLETE THIS SERVICE REQUIREMENT MAY RESULT IN THE TERMINATION OF THIS AGREEMENT AND MY REPAYMENT OF ANY UNEARNED PORTION OF THE AIP PAYMENT. I FURTHER UNDERSTAND THAT REPAYMENT WILL NOT BE SOUGHT IF MY INABILITY TO COMPLETE THE SERVICE REQUIREMENT SPECIFIED IN THIS AGREEMENT IS DUE TO MY DEATH, ILLNESS, INJURY OR OTHER PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENT, WHICH WAS NOT THE RESULT OF MY MISCONDUCT, OR OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE DETERMINED TO BE REASONABLY BEYOND MY CONTROL."
Career Retention Specialists will prepare the AIP contracts. AIP contracts must be signed by the Marine and the Battalion levelo commander. Written agreements will begin on the date signed. Monthly payment will be calculated in 30 day increments based on the extension duration.
Termination
Payment of AIP will terminate when the following occurs:
a. Service-initiated, or other, no fault-of-the-Marine, curtailment of AIP tour.
b. Terminal leave.
