James White's Fort

Located downtown, the Fort is a series of cabins enclosed inside a log wall to provide an educational experience of what it would have been like to live in Tennessee during the frontier days. For more information, visit http://www.korrnet.org/jwf, or call 865.525.6514.

John Seiver's Cabin

Known also as Marble Springs State Historic Site, the last home of Tennessee's Revolutionary War hero John Seiver, is preserved in a 30-acre farm setting just outside of town. For more information, visit www.marblesprings.org, or call 865.573.5508.

Crescent Bend

Confederate and Union troops were around the grounds during the war, but today the home, which was built in 1834, is a masterpiece, with magnificent gardens that lead down to the Tennessee River. For more information, visit www.CresentBend.org, or call 865.637.3163.

Blount Mansion

Known as "The little house with big stories," Blount Mansion was the home of former signer of the U.S. Constitution, William Blount, after his role during the Revolutionary War. For more information, visit www.blountmansion.org, or call 888.654.0016.

East Tennessee Historical Center

On the 3rd Floor is the rifle from arguably Tennessee's most famous military son, Davy Crocket. For more information on the East Tennessee Historical Center visit www: east-tennessee-history, or or call 865.215.8824.

How to Get to Knoxville: Don't overlook Knoxville's growing airport; I had done this in the past and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Knoxville recently added direct service to Tampa bypassing what in the past would have been a mandatory change of planes in Atlanta. Independence Airlines also recently began flying to Knoxville; now giving Knoxville nine airlines. For more information on flights to and from Knoxville, visit: www.tys.org. For the Knoxville, Convention and Visitor's Bureau visit www.Knoxville.org, or call 800.727.8045.

If you go to Knoxville: Eats - Riverside Tavern -- Upscale dining downtown on the river; Pasta Trio, a hip place to eat and the food is wonderful; and for Tennessee B-B-Q, Buddy's BBQ, a chain that often wins local best BBQ awards.

Lodging - The Knoxville Marriott, 12 floors and 378 rooms, located adjacent to downtown but with plenty of free parking. Rooms rates vary greatly depending on time of year and whether or not there is a nearby University of Tennessee football game, but rates are generally in the $85-$95 range.
