Definition: (DOD) An aircraft assigned to perform precautionary search and rescue or combat search and rescue missions, support deployment of single-engine aircraft, or meet other specialized situations. The aircraft can perform a secondary role as navigation aid to passing aircraft. The aircraft is electronically equipped to provide radar tracking, homing, and steering, and gives position and weather reports as required.
