2010 Military Pay and Benefit Changes

Active Duty Size

The 2010 Defense Authorization Act is now law. The act includes many changes in how the military is funded and operates in 2010.

Section 401 of the act sets the maximum active duty strength of each of the four DOD active duty branches as follows:

Army: 562,400 (30,000 more than last year)
Air Force: 331,700 (14,650 more than last year)
Navy: 328,800 (2,477 more than last year)
Marine Corps: 202,100 (8,100 more than last year)
DOD Active Duty Total: 1,425,000 (55,227 more than last year)

Note: Section 403 of the bill authorizes the Army to exceed the above limits by 30,000 Soldiers during Fiscal Year 2011, and Fiscal Year 2012.

Section 402 of the bill sets the minimum active duty strength of each of the four DOD active duty branches as follows:

Army: 547,400 (15,000 more than last year)
Air Force: 331,700 (14,650 more than last year)
Navy: 328,800 (3,500 more than last year)
Marine Corps: 202,100 (8,100 more than last year)
DOD Active Duty Total: 1,410,000 (41,250 more than last year)
