21D - - Diver

Basic Job Description

An Engineer Diver in the Army performs such tasks as reconnaissance, demolition, and salvage, all while being underwater. As an Army Diver, you'll specialize either as a scuba diver, who works just below the surface of the water, or as a deep sea diver, who usually works for long periods of time in depths up to 190 feet.

Duties performed by Soldiers in this MOS include:

Performs underwater work as directed from topside supervisor or lead diver. Operates power support equipment, emplaces demolitions and performs as secondary air systems operator during diving and recompression chamber operations.

Performs as lead diver during underwater work. Prepares patching materials and pumps for salvage operations. Prepares explosives for placement. Prepares rigging and lifting devices for salvage of submerged objects. Assists diving supervisor in preparing equipment for diving operations. Performs as primary operator on air systems and underwater support equipment during diving and recompression chamber operations.

Training Information

36 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), including practice in diving and repair work. The diving course is conducted at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Panama City, Florida.

ASVAB Score Required: 100 in aptitude area GM and a standard score of 110 or higher in aptitude area GT or ST.

Security Clearance: None

Strength Requirement: very heavy.

Physical Profile Requirement: 111111
