13M--Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS/HIMARS) Crewmember

Basic Job Description

A Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Crewmember is an important part of the Army's combat team. MLRS teams are used to support infantry and tank units while supplementing cannon artillery in combat, but they also have responsibilities during peacetime. The MLRS launches various missiles and ammunition in quick strikes during combat. The crewmembers are responsible for operating and maintaining the entire MLRS system.

Duties performed by this MOS include:

Drives the M270 Self-Propelled Loader Launcher and the ammunition re-supply vehicle and trailer. Performs operator/crew maintenance on the self-propelled loader launcher and ammunition re-supply vehicle and trailer. Performs ammunition reload operations on the launcher and re-supply vehicle. Tests, removes, and replaces fire control system components as needed on the M270 launcher and the launch pod/container trainer. Mounts radio sets in vehicles, cables communication components in M270 launcher, and operates and performs operator maintenance on communications equipment.

Assists section chief in supervision of operations, maintenance, and training. Leads and instructs the reconnaissance team in combat operations. Assists the ammunition section chief in supervision of the section during ammunition re-supply operations, maintenance, and training. Performs start-up of fire control system, and operates multiple launch rocket system fire control system in all modes of operation. Makes manual fire control entries and enters meteorological data into the fire control system. Fires weapon on command. Performs fire control system diagnostic test using built-in test equipment. Prepares launcher-loader module for reload and performs maintenance operations. Conducts reconnaissance to determine routes and precise firing location sites.

Initial Training Information

Job training for multiple launch rocket system crewmember requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and four weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instruction. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and in the field under simulated combat conditions.

ASVAB Score Required: 95 in aptitude area OF.

Security Clearance: Secret

Strength Requirement: moderately heavy
