Navy Enlisted Rating (Job) Descriptions and Qualification Factors

ASVAB Sub-Test Definitions

By Rod Powers, About.com

Unlike the other services, the Navy does not re-compute ASVAB sub-test scores into individual "line scores." Instead, for job-qualification purposes, the Navy requires a minimum total score from various sub-tests of the ASVAB.

For example, if the ASVAB score requirement on the Navy Job Description Page says "PC + AR = 105," that means that the total (sum) of one's ASVAB sub-test scores of Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), must be at least 105, in order to qualify for that job.

The ASVAB Sub-Test Composites Used by the Navy are:

  • General Science (GS)
  • Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
  • Word Knowledge (WK)
  • Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
  • Numerical Operations (NO)
  • Coding Speed (CS)
  • Auto and Shop Information (AS)
  • Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
  • Mechanical Comprehension (MC)
  • Electronics Information (EI)
  • Sum of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension (VE)
  • Assembly of Objects (AO)
