Machinary Repairman (MR)

General Info:

Machinery Repairmen are skilled machine tool operators. They make replacement parts and repair or overhaul ship's engines and auxiliary systems. They also work on deck equipment including winches and hoists, condensers and heat exchange devices. MR's occasionally operate main propulsion and auxiliary machinery in addition to performing machine shop and repair duties.

What They Do:

The duties performed by MR's include: repairing and operating auxiliary machinery; calculating time and material needed for machine shop work and the repairing of auxiliary machinery; drawing sketches and preparing specifications for replacement parts; working from sketches and specifications to produce replacement parts; operating machine shop equipment, such as lathes, drill presses, shapers, bench grinders, milling machines, boring mills, power hacksaws and computer numerically controlled machinery; working with precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, depth gauges, verniers, calipers, gauge blocks, protractors and dial indicators; engraving metal and other materials; performing electroplating and flame spraying operations.

VE+AR+MK+AS=200 or MK+AS+AO=150

Other Requirements:

Must have normal hearing

Notes: Visual acuity must be correctable to 20/20. When specified, uncorrected visual acuity must not be greater than that indicated (i.e. 20/100), and must be correctable to 20/20. Normal hearing required. Frequencies: 3000hz 4000hz 5000hz 6000hz Average hearing threshold level in these four frequencies must be less than 30db, with no level greater than 45db in any one frequency. If hearing level exceeds these limits, the applicant is enlistment ineligible for the rating.

Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling. Advanced technical and operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.

Introduction to technical documentation, basic mechanical theory, safety precautions and programs, alignment and operation of piping systems and equipment, hand tools, precision instruments, lubricants, bearings, couplings, gears, valves, pumps and the Maintenance Material Management System (3M) Group instruction and practical application

Familiarization with machines, shop tools, equipment, and methods used on the job Group instruction and practical application

After "A" school, Machinery Repairmen will be assigned to Navy machine shops aboard ships, at repair bases, and various other shore facilities in the United States or overseas. During a 20-year period in the Navy, MR's spend about 50 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 50 percent to shore stations.

Working Environment:

People in the MR rating usually work indoors in a machine shop situation where many motor-powered machine tools are present. They work closely with others and are closely supervised.
