General Info: (NOTE: This rating has merged with the CTT Rating. See related article).
EWs in the Advanced Electronic Field (AEF) repair and conduct preventive maintenance on computer-controlled electronic equipment used for detection, analysis, and identification of radar emissions. They also perform duties as equipment operators, conducting a variety of specialized duties associated with the collection and processing of airborne, shipborne, and land-based radar signals. They operate electronic intelligence receiving and direction finding systems, digital recording devices, analysis terminals, and associated computer equipment. Systems they operate and maintain produce high-power jamming signals used to deceive electronic sensors and defeat radar guided weapons systems.
Additionally, intelligence derived from collection and processing update national databases which are crucial to tactical and strategic units throughout the world. The minimum active duty enlistment obligation is six years. EW-AEF students receive up to an additional ten months of advanced electronics and computer training. Enlistees enter Recruit Training Command (RTC) as E-1s (seaman recruits). EW-AEF recruits are advanced to E-2 (seaman apprentice) after successful completion of recruit training. Advancement to E-3 is contingent upon completion of all advancement-in-rate requirements (including minimum time-in-rate). EWs maintaining eligibility in the AEF program are awarded accelerated advancement to E-4 after successful completion of their "A" and "C" schools if all advancement-in-rate requirements are complete.
What They Do:
The duties performed by EW-AEFs include: Operating, repairing, and maintaining electronic detection/deception systems; the first line of defense against inbound threats and anti-ship missiles for deployed units; tracking surface and airborne targets of interest to determine defensive maneauvers and tactics in case of attack; operating state-of-the-art electronic receivers, signal modifiers, digital recording devices and associated peripherals in collection of airborne, shipborne, and land-based radar signals; creating and maintaining technical databases used by local and national level agencies. providing electronic intelligence support to commands throughout the world; working with highly classified and technical material in support of national security.

Subjects: Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) and Electronic Warfare operations Training Methods: Group, individual instruction and laboratory Students receive extensive training utilizing modern, computer simulated scenarios. Graduates are usually assigned to sea duty on ships for their first tour, working in the Combat Information Center.
Working Environment:
EWs perform their duties on board surface ships and at shore stations. On board ships they stand watch in the Combat Information Center (CIC), providing critical electronic intelligence to key decision-makers. The duties of EWs are usually performed in clean, air-conditioned spaces. EWs normally work alone with little supervision on tasks that require more mental than physical effort.
