| Port Security Specialist (PS) | |||||||||||||||||||||
Port Security is just what the name implies -- the job of safeguarding our ports and keeping them operable under all types of situations. Port Security Specialists have a major role in safeguarding critical or vital ports of commerce, wherever Coast Guard units operate, both overseas and the U. S. against the threat of terrorism and other acts of maritime crime. As a specialist in the field of port security, youll work at a Marine Safety Office (MSO), enforcing maritime laws and regulations to ensure the physical security of the port or you may serve in a Port Security Unit (PSU), training for deployment in support of the Department of Defense's national defense operations. Port Security Specialists are trained in general law enforcement and defensive combat techniques to provide limited shoreside and waterside security. This may include providing protective security for your own unit and restricting access to vessels, waterfront facilities and waterways through the enforcement of security zones. Note: This rating is closed to active duty. It is available *ONLY* for the Coast Reserves. Qualifications: Above average learning ability, normal hearing, vision (including color vision), physical strength/agility and good interpersonal skills. Any prior experience in law enforcement or military experience is extremenly valuable. ASVAB Score Requirements: VE+AR OF 101 Training: If you enter through the RK or RP program, you will attend the seven week PS school in Yorktown, VA, following successful completion of Recruit Training at Cape May, NJ. PSs are trained in general law-enforcement and defensive combat techniques to provide limited shoreside and waterside security.
