The Operations Specialist (OS) is the tactical command, control communications and Intelligence rating. They perform functions ranging from Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement Case execution, to Air Control and intelligence analysts. Operate the most advanced tactical computer systems the Coast Guard has incorporating satellite communications, global position navigation, electronic charting systems to real-time target acquisition, tracking and identification utilizing a vast array of communications systems, sensors and computers.

OS’s are stationed throughout the Coast Guard, including Alaska, Hawaii and Guam, They man every Group Operations Centers/Communications Centers, District Command Centers, Aboard all major cutters, Coast guard Intelligence Centers, and Joint Command Centers, An OS can either run a Search and Rescue case at one command, and next command may conduct Air Intercepts at the next command, and then either return to a Group Operations center, or work in the intelligence Field.

Qualifications:

To be an OS, you should have an interest in computers and communications, an aptitude for detailed work, and an above average in solving mathematical problems. You must have normal color vision.

ASVAB Score Requirements: VE + AR = 106

Training:

An OS can expect to receive extensive training in Search and Rescue, Law enforcement coordination, Tactical employment of weapons systems and intelligence and leadership training. At mid career, high performing OSs may compete for selection to the Joint Military Intelligence College Advanced Computer, Engineering, and Technology education program, which provides 9 month full-time, paid for college for the member to obtain a Bachelors or Masters degree in Intelligence.
