Background
The French Croix de Guerre was instituted on 8 April 1915 by the French Government to recognize acts of bravery in the face of the enemy specifically mentioned in dispatches during WWI. It was again authorized, with certain changes in 1939 for WWII.
Both Army units and individuals were awarded the French Croix de Guerre during WWI and WWII. The Croix de Guerre may be bestowed at different levels of command. The level of the awarding command determines the appurtenance that is worn on the ribbon. A bronze palm designates that the honor was awarded by the Army. A silver gilt star denotes the corps; a silver star specifies a division; and bronze star signifies that a regiment or brigade awarded the medal.
The French Fourragére is approved for both permanent and temporary wear. Military members that are assigned to a unit which was awarded the fourragére may wear the fourragére during their time assigned to the unit.
