Things to Consider When Choosing to Join the Army
Job Opportunities

By , About.com Guide

The Army has more enlisted MOS's (Military Occupational Specialties), or jobs, than any other branch. Only the Marine Corps comes close. The Army is the only branch in which every single recruit ships out to basic training with a guaranteed job in his/her enlistment contract. The Army does not have any "general" enlistments, where one enlists and then finds out what their military job is going to be after enlisting. Of course, that does not mean you're going to get the Army job you want. It depends on whether you meet the qualifications for the job, and whether or not the job has an available slot (opening) at the time of your enlistment. The Army even has the capability to allow you to reserve a job right there in the recruiter's office, before you even travel to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) to find out if you're qualified for the job. Of all the services, however, the Army has the worst reputation for using Soldiers in jobs outside of the MOS they were trained in, upon arrival at their regulation duty stations, and when deployed. Several Army jobs are closes to women, as they are considered direct-combat jobs. The Army has two primary special operations jobs -- Rangers, and Special Forces (Green Beret).
