Army Re-Enlistment Bonuses

The Army offers lump-sum re-enlistment bonuses for Soldiers who hold certain Military Occupation Specialties and/or special skills, who agree to re-enlist in the active duty Army. Whether or not a bonus is offered, and the exact amount of the monetary bonus depends on several factors, including MOS/Skill, rank, how much active duty time the Soldier has, and how long the Soldier is re-enlisting for. Re-Enlistment bonuses are subject to Federal income tax, except when the Soldier re-enlists in a designated combat zone. In that case, the entire amount of the re-enlistment bonus is tax-free. Whether or not a re-enlistment bonus is subject to state income tax, depends on the laws of the individual state, that the Soldier claims as his/her legal residence.

Effective Feb. 20, 2009, soldiers who hold a critical skill listed in the table at the bottom of this page, with a SQI/ASI as indicated and re-enlist for locations and positions in the chart may be entitled to a lump-sum bonus as follows:

Zone A (those who have between 17 months and 6 years of active duty service)

• Private First Class (E-3) who re-enlists for 12-23 months: $2,000
• Private First Class (E-3) who re-enlists for 24-35 months: $3,000
• Private First Class (E-3) who re-enlists for 36-47 months: $6,000
• Private First Class (E-3) who re-enlists for 48-59 months: $9,000
• Private First Class (E-3) who re-enlists for 60+ months: $11,500
• Specialist/Corporal (E-4) who re-enlists for 12-23 months: $3,000
• Specialist/Corporal (E-4) who re-enlists for 24-35 months: $4,000
• Specialist/Corporal (E-4) who re-enlists for 36-47 months: $7,500
• Specialist/Corporal (E-4) who re-enlists for 48-59 months: $9,500
• Specialist/Corporal (E-4) who re-enlists for 60+ months: $14,000
• Sergeant (E-5) who re-enlists for 12-23 months: $4,000
• Sergeant (E-5) who re-enlists for 24-35 months: $5,000
• Sergeant (E-5) who re-enlists for 36-47 months: $8,000
• Sergeant (E-5) who re-enlists for 48-59 months: $10,000
• Sergeant (E-5) who re-enlists for 60+ months: $15,000
• Staff Sergeant (E-6) who re-enlists for 12-23 months: $5,000
