Fort Huachuca was built in 1877, as one of the forts created to protect southern Arizona against the Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. It was here that the soldiers were based that compelled the surrrender of Geronimo. Fort Huachuca was also the headquarters of the famed 10th Cavalry, the "Buffalo Soldiers," one of the Army's elite black cavalry corps. Today the fort is an active Army post and covers more than 70,000 acres. It is a military community with a small town ambience and surrounded by scenic vistas.
Fort Huachuca is a major communications and intelligence center for the military. in southern Arizona. Huachuca is home to units such as the Army Intelligence Center, the Army Information Systems Command, and the Joint Interoperability Test Command. Also at Huachuca are field test facilities and test ranges for communications systems and equipment, including an electronic proving ground complex, associated with White Sands Missile Range and Aberdeen Proving Ground
