Surviving Air Force Basic Training

Pre-Deployment Training

By , About.com Guide

In addition to drill, physical fitness training, inspections, weapons training, running the obstacle course, and all the other things happening during the pre-deployment phase of Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT), you'll have classroom and field instruction on subjects that will prepare you for an Air Force combat deployment -- all in preparation for your trip to The BEAST, during week six.

Week three focuses on self-aid and buddy care. In other words, how to give first aid to yourself and your buddies during combat and non-combat scenarios.

In week four, you'll have lessons on how to counter threats such as terrorism, biological and chemical weapons and security breaches.

You'll also get a chance to go through the gas chamber. The Air Force used to conduct initial chemical warfare training (including the gas chamber) at the recruit's first permanent duty station. However, in September 2002, the training was added to Air Force basic training. What can I say about the "gas chamber?" It's designed to give you confidence in your gas mask. Luckily, in the Air Force, the gas chamber is a one-time requirement (although, through one's Air Force career, one will get plenty of practice wearing the chemical warfare equipment).

Week five, the final week of the pre-deployment phase, will introduce you to the code of conduct, law of armed conflict, basic leadership and mental preparation for combat.
