School age children attend the Department of Defense Dependent Schools within the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC). The KMC is the largest school district outside the continental United States, with 20 schools, approximately 7960 students, and a teaching staff of 500. DoDDS schools are of equal quality and curriculum to stateside schools.
A variety of special education services are available through DoDDS from age 3-21. All schools are located near government housing areas. The school your child(ren) attends will depend on where you live, not where you work. Students who live on base walk to school; all others ride the bus. To ride the bus, students must have a current bus pass. To obtain a bus pass, parents can register the Student Transportation Office (STO). Enrollment in schools is based on where you live.
All students enrolling in grades K-12 must have a certificate of immunization, verified at the local medical facility, current immunizations required are against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), varicella (VAR), chicken pox, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus toxoids, and Polio virus.
The following documents are required to enroll students in DoDDS: Sponsor's Orders with enrolling dependents listed, Parent ID, Student Social Security Number, Shot Record, Previous school records/address , Birth Certificate/Passport (Kindergarten & 1st grade) , Stepchildren must have a copy of the sponsor's marriage certificate provided as proof of the student's eligibility as a tuition-free/space-required student.
Tuition for one school year can range from: Kindergarten - 6th Grade 7th - 8th Grade 9th - 12th Grade $14,256 $15,000 $15,756 $14,796 $15,564 $16,344
Students residing in a district outside the KMC must attend school in that district.
It is recommended that before you rent quarters on the economy, you check with the housing office to determine if the residence is along an established school bus route. Safe and courteous conduct of dependents riding the school buses is the responsibility of the sponsor.
Parents who elect to enroll their children in private schools, host nation school, or even home schools may also enroll their children in DoDDS on a part-time basis to permit them to complete graduation requirements or to obtain a course required for admission to a specific post-graduation program. Home-schooled students are authorized to attend DoDDS classes for any courses needed to support their academic schedule. If you are interested in home-schooling, there is a support group in the KMC area: The Christian Home Educator Support Group.
There are several private educational options available in the area.
You may also choose to enroll your children in German schools rather than American schools. To do so, you must visit the school in or near the village in which you lives to register your child.
