There are three basic avenues for educating school-age children while you are stationed at RAF Lakenheath or RAF Mildenhall - Department of Defense Dependent Schools, British Schools or Home Schooling. The School Liaison Officer on RAF Lakenheath is available to provide support and information related to dependent education.

The School Liaison Office is located in the Liberty Center at RAF Lakenheath. he School Liaison Office can provide information on DoDDs schools located at RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell, which are used by the RAF Lakenheath, Feltwell and Mildenhall communities. There are no schools at RAF Mildenhall.

The DSN phone number is 314-226-5077 or 5078 and the commercial number to call from the United States is 011-44-1638-52-5077/78.

RAF Lakenheath/Mildenhall/Feltwell School Complex has five schools with approx 2,500 students. They are all Department of Defense Dependent Schools.

On RAF Lakenheath, there is Lakenheath Elementary School, which is Kindergarten through 3rd Grade; Liberty Intermediate School, which is 4th and 5th Grades; and Lakenheath High School, which is 9th through 12th Grade.

On RAF Feltwell there is Feltwell Elementary School, which is Kindergarten through 5th Grade, and Lakenheath Middle School, which is 6th through 8th Grade. Also located at RAF Feltwell is the Isles District Superintendent's Office.

Many American parents see a few years spent in a British school as an excellent experience for their children. Places can usually be found at local schools, though not always at the school nearest to home, as this part of the country has a steady influx of young British families and has shown a consistent pattern of growth for the last fifteen years.

If your assignment in Britain is likely to last less than a year after your child's admission, the school will usually deny your request. Neither will they take children living on base, who are expected to use DOD schools.

Everyone based at RAF Mildenhall will live in either Suffolk, Norfolk, or Cambridgeshire county. Although the education system is government run, each county has a certain amount of leeway in applying the rules.

Children in the UK start full time, regular free state schooling in the term in which they become five years old. In Cambridgeshire, however, they can start full time regular schooling after their fourth birthday.

You can home school your children while you are in the UK. There are a few support groups on RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall for home schooling families. Parents have a right to choose the kind of education that can be given to their children. If there are some classes in which your child would benefit from classroom instruction, you may enroll your child at the school within the appropriate catchment area. Students who are home schooled can participate in "auxiliary services" however, they must meet DoDDS registration requirements and register at the school within feeder plan (to participate in classes).
