Air Force Officer Training School (OTS) Selection Statistics
The Air Force conducts OTS selection boards every six weeks at the Air Force Recruiting Service Headquarters. As part of the selection process, board members review both objective and subjective factors. Objectively, the board considers each applicants academic discipline, grade point average, and Air Force Officer Qualifying Test scores. Subjectively, board members evaluate work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability, potential for future growth, and other recommendations. For active duty enlisted members, performance reports and commanders recommendations are also evaluated. A minimum of three Air Force colonels review every application. The selection process is similar to an Air Force officer promotion board. Key to the entire process is that no single factor leads to an individual's selection or non-selection, according to OTS selection officials.
Qualitative factors consist of the applicant's college grade-point average (GPA) and the scores from the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT). The AFOQT scores are categorized into six separate areas: Pilot Score, Navigator Score, Academic Aptitude Score, Verbal Score, and Quantitative Score.
Below are the averages for recent selectees:
Note: The Air Force Recruiting Command did not release score statistics for the Aug 02 to May 03 board release dates.
Note: For the Feb 03, Mar 03, and May 03 boards, the Air Force restricted applications to pilot/navigator applicants, and those holding technical degrees, such as degrees in science and engineering. This accounts for the significant drop in number of applicants considered. This moratorium is scheduled to remain in effect at least through the remainder of FY 03.
