A few (very few) military personnel, such as special investigators and some assigned to Embassy or White House duty, are required to wear civilian clothes while on duty. These individuals are authorized to receive a special civilian clothing allowance to help pay for and maintain civilian clothes worn while on duty.

Military members who perform temporary duty, requiring the wear of civilian clothes for more than 15 days, but less than 30 days, are given a on-time civilian clothing allowance of $313.56.

Those who are required to perform duties in civilian clothing for longer than 30 days in a 36 month period are paid a one-time civilian clothing allowance of $627.12.

Members who are required to wear civilian clothing on duty during their permament assignment are paid an initial allowance of $940.68, then $313.56 annually.

Like most other military "allowances," the civilian clothing allowance is not subject to income taxes.
