Congress has passed the FY 2007 Military Authorization Act, and President Bush signed the act into law on October 17, 2006.

There were two versions of the act being considered. The House version called for an across-the-board 2.7 percent pay raise, and the Senate version called for a 2.2 percent pay increase. The Senate version won out.

The act also calls for a separate, "targeted" raise of up to 8.14 percent, for some Warrant Officers and up to 2.45 percent for some mid-level enlisted members, effective on April 1, 2007.

Under previous law, time-in-service raises, known as "longivity raises," stopped when one reached 26 years of service. The new law establishes time-in-service raises for senior enlisted, senior warrant officers and senior commissioned officers who have between 28 and 40 years of service.

The 2.2 percent raise and longivity rates are effective on January 1, 2007, which means that military members will see it in their January 15 paychecks. .
