The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established as a military alliance primarily to counter a growing Soviet threat. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington on 4 April 1949, creating an alliance of 12 independent nations committed to each other's defense.

Since the end of the Cold War, NATO has primarily been involved in smaller, regional "peacekeeping" in areas such as Bosnia and Kosovo.

Europe has decided to create a European-lead quick reaction force, using European-owned NATO assets.
