Whales Beach Themselves after Naval Exercise: Scientists are trying to understand why about a dozen whales became stranded last week on two beaches in the Bahamas, a highly unusual event that coincided with U.S. Navy operations in the area. Beachgoers pushed several of the beaked whales back into the waters after the 12-foot to 15-foot toothed mammals mysteriously swam or washed ashore last Thursday, one day after a Navy exercise in which loud noises were propagated through waters in the region. Five of the animals ultimately died ashore.

Americans Flock to Play "Boot Camp.": NEW YORK - Cold, frustrated and impossibly tired, Jennifer Bowden flings out her elbows and knees in a struggle to belly-crawl through a sandpit in the freezing darkness. Her arms sizzle with pain, her clothes fill with chunks of snow and dirt and her face stings from the frosty darts of a pre-dawn snowfall. Under the shadow of New York's skyscrapers, in Central Park, a retired Navy Seal named Jack Walston is giving the seven men and eight women a taste of military life. Just a taste, however.

Rockers Rally for Veterans: CLEARWATER, Fla. - Norman LaFountaine traveled hundreds of miles to listen Saturday to the blare of rock from a bygone era and relive memories of a war that divided the country. VetRock 2000, an all-day concert by bands whose glory days were in the 1960s and 70s, kicked off a 31-city tour to raise money for Vietnam veteran outreach groups. Blood, Sweat & Tears, John Kay and Steppenwolf, The Animals II, The Guess Who, and the Lovin Spoonful were among the performers.

UN Plans to Give Condoms to Peacekeepers: UNITED NATIONS - Worried by the threat of AIDS among U.N. peacekeepers, the United Nations has decided to distribute a condom a day to each of the 16,000 male troops it plans to send to Congo and Sierra Leone this year. The decision is the closest the United Nations has ever come to acknowledging one of the dirty secrets of peacekeeping: that U.N. troops around the world frequent brothels and are in danger of contracting the HIV virus that causes AIDS, as well as providing a market for prostitution and the trafficking of women.

Russia's Military Firmly Behind Putin: MOSCOW -- Soldiers in Chechnya cast absentee ballots Friday in Russia's presidential election and a top general said they overwhelmingly back acting President Vladimir Putin, who has made building a powerful military a key part of restoring Russia's global clout. Reviving the military is one of the few firm ideas Putin has offered as he seeks a full term in March 26 elections. It's an idea that has gone down well with Russians nostalgic for the past, helping give Putin a commanding lead in the election race.

Is C.O. Responsible for Marine's Death?: No one knows who shot Lance Cpl. Samuel D. Irwin. Perhaps no one will ever know. Survey - Pay is the #1 Reason People Leave/Stay: When Congress set out last year to find out what active-duty service members like and dislike about today's military, it hoped the information would help set personnel policies. GI Bill isn't what it used to be: WASHINGTON - For Manuel Rivas, the GI Bill offered him an opportunity in 1946 that was too good to pass up. Just coming out of World War II, Rivas was among millions of veterans to take advantage of the paid college education the government offered for those who served. Today's veteran leaving active duty faces a much dimmer picture, advocates say. Even though veterans still can sign up for GI Bill benefits and actually donate $1,200 of their own money towards the fund, the legislation is sorely inadequate, advocates say, to meet skyrocketing costs of a college education today.

Review finds Flaws in Kosovo Bombing Campaign: WASHINGTON - It was the most precise bombing campaign in history, but the U.S. air assault against Serbia last year also revealed serious inadequacies in American military might. That is the conclusion of the "lessons learned" by the Pentagon from the NATO operation that began a year ago Friday. Despite unrelenting bad weather and a few glaring mistakes, American warplanes flew more than 35,000 sorties and achieved an unprecedented 99 percent bombing accuracy rate.
