MILITARY MATTERS
Newsletter #2 (15 Aug 99)

Howdy all, and welcome to the second edition of Military Matters, the weekly newsletter for About.com's U.S. Military Page.

If you haven't browsed through the Netlinks in a while, you're in for a surprise. I recently added about 200 more links to quality information about the military. I've also added two more categories, "Selling to the Military," and "Leave, Travel, and R&R." The first category contains links to information about obtaining contracts to sell items or services to the military. The latter contains links to information for off-duty time, including Space A information, MWR discounts, etc. U.S. Military's main page can be reached at http://usmilitary.about.com. (Full stories available at http://usmilitary.about.com/library/news/blnews.htm) (AOL: )

(Aug 14) China is still posing a threat to Taiwan, and may even have told United States officials that they plan to punish Taiwan militarily because of their recent outspoken words about being separate from mainland rule.

(Aug 13) It's that time of the year again, right before the annual military payraises where everyone takes a look at how much money they can get out of the G.I. next year. DOD child care has done this again, and - of course - child care rates all over the World will be going up

(Aug 13) I knew it was coming. In fact, it took a little longer than I estimated. The Pentagon has announced mandatory "sensitivity training" for all personnel on a yearly bases, focusing on the proper way to treat and act around homosexuals.

(Aug 13) The Super-Hacker that DOD is looking for - the one who broke into hundreds of DOD computer systems? Turns out he may be in Israel. Because Israel doesn't allow its citizens to be extradited to the United States, he may get off scott-free, in spite of the millions of dollars in military and economic aid we provide Israel each year.

If you're an Air Force puke, there is nothing funnier than a pilot, unless it happens to be a good pilot joke. This site has a nice selection of some goodies.

A federal appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit by a veterans group that said the government broke its promise of lifetime health care benefits for those with 20 years of military service.
The U.S. Court of Appeals dismissed the lawsuit Monday, saying retirees do not have the absolute right to medical and dental care, but they may be given the service subject to availability.
