MILITARY MATTERS
Newsletter #1 (1 Aug 99)

Howdy all, and welcome to the very first edition of Military Matters, the weekly newsletter for About.com's U.S. Military Page.

I am excited! The U.S. Military Page has been "live" now for about 1 ½ months, and already we have several articles and features, a daily news column, over 900 links to quality, military-related information, and an ever-growing list of members. And now, our own weekly newsletter! The next MAJOR addition to our Site will be a Forum Message Board, hopefully within a couple of months. I'm really looking forward to being able to share views, opinions, and military gossip with the other members.

This week's feature covers some of the tips we've learned in the Persian Gulf about surviving extreme heat conditions.

NEWSWORTHY TIDBITS IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK:
(Full stories available at http://usmilitary.about.com/library/news/blnews.htm)

(28 Jul and 31 Jul) -- A lot of history comes to an end with the closure of two major U.S. Military bases - The Panama Canal, and Rhein Main Air Base in Germany. I've never been to Panama, but I've flown in and out of Rhein Main on at least a dozen occasions. Don't worry, though, folks. There's still plenty of garden spot assignments available in places like Kosovo, Haiti, and Bosnia!

(25 Jul and 28 Jul) -- There have been several stories throughout the week about China and Taiwan getting froggy with each other, and now it appears as if the U.S. may have a secret defense agreement with Taiwan! I wonder what this may mean for our future, given China's stated objective of reunification, and President's Clinton's track record of military deployments. The next "police action" could be a nasty one.

(26 Jul) -- The Air Force and Navy may lose the F-22. Congress is trying to dramatically cut procurement of the F-22, ATF, to the point where several millions of dollars will have to be added to buy in the future. This may well kill the F-22 program.

(26 Jul) -- President Clinton wants to spend 1 Billion on Veteran Medical Programs. However, experts all agree, that's about 2 Billion too little, if we wish to give quality medical care to all entitled veterans.

(26 Jul) -- U.S. Forces shot up Iraq a little more this week and five U.S. Servicemen were killed when their observation plane crashed in Columbia. Please remember, folks, our military forces are currently stretched out all over the World in places other than Kosovo.

(27 Jul) - The Red Cross finished it's two-year consolidation by opening up a state-of-the-art, central communications facility. This will eliminate the need of having Red Cross volunteers stationed on each base. Notifications will now be made from the central facility, and Red Cross loans can be arranged via telephone, as well.

(31 Jul) -- More than 350 athletes and officials from all the military services will be traveling to Zagreb, Croatia, to compete in the 2nd Military World Games Aug. 5-18.

MILITARY LAW CORNER: (http://www.oweb.com/minotdaily/text/newsarchive/73099/30missle.htm)

A Minot Air Force Base missile officer who doesn't want to serve with women officers in underground missile capsules because of his religious beliefs, has won the support of 77 congressional members. 1st Lt. Ryan Berry, an officer with the 91st Space Wing at Minot AFB, has voiced religious objections to working alone with a woman in an underground capsule. He said serving with a woman in remote missile launch centers is against Roman Catholic teachings on temptation and avoiding the appearance of sin. The Lt has now been removed from missile duties and is appealing a bad OER. My guess is the Lt hasn't got a leg to stand on. The bad OER will remain part of his records, and he'll soon be out of the service. Personal religious beliefs are honored by the Military only to the point where they don't interfere with normal duties.

JUST FOR FUN:

Military Hidden Word. In the puzzle below, there are 20 military words hidden. Words can be listed frontward, backward, up, down, and horizontally. The author only put 20 military words in here ON PURPOSE. If you find more than 20, (1) You're very, very good at this, and (2) It was unintended.
