Being Called to Active Duty Impacts on the Household Budget: At first she thought she'd just have to sell the car. Now she's selling the house. With her husband, a lieutenant in the Army Reserve, called up for active duty, Amy Bennett just can't afford the mortgage payments on their Centreville home. It is, she knows, a drastic move. But with an 8-month-old boy to look after and her world suddenly turned upside down, she decided it was best to cash in their biggest investment and stick the money in the bank. She'll wait for her husband, Jonathan, to get home from his station in Texas, and then they'll start over. "The financial pressure is starting to set in," said Bennett, who expects her annual household income to drop from about $85,000 to $35,000. "I'm going to live with my parents."
