Afghan Envoy Calls for UN Troops: UNITED NATIONS -- The United Nations' top Afghan envoy presented the Security Council today with a blueprint for a transitional government in Afghanistan and asked members to consider dispatching a multinational force to protect it. Though he previously resisted sending foreign troops into Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi said the dramatic collapse of Taliban rule meant there was no time to arrange an Afghan security force, and international troops would be needed to protect the new administration. |
