Air Force Hands Embezzlement Case Over to Justice Department: AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — The case of an Aviano cashier who is being investigated for allegedly embezzling $412,000 from the 31st Services Squadron has been forwarded to the Department of Justice, which is deciding where to seek prosecution. Maj. Mike Richmond, a spokesman for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, said the Justice Department might try to prosecute in one of three places: Washington, D.C.; the suspect’s legal state of residence; or where she last lived in the United States. A spokesman for the Justice Department said Tuesday that he didn’t know the status of the case.
