Okinawa Governor Calls Rand Study Recommendations Unacceptable: CAMP FOSTER — Okinawa’s governor was shocked Tuesday to learn of a U.S. proposal to develop more military bases in his prefecture. Gov. Keiichi Inamine, was in Washington on a two-week trip to lobby U.S. officials for continued reduction of the bases when he heard of a U.S. Air Force-funded study suggesting Japan give the United States access to a commercial airport on Shimoji Island in return for cutting the number of Marines on Okinawa. The study, released Monday, was completed by the Rand Corp., a Washington-based think tank. The report is expected to significantly affect U.S. policy in Asia, especially since its author, Zalmay Khalilzad, started work Monday as a senior director of the National Security Council. |
