House Ready to Move to Army Fort: In the wake of the anthrax scare on Capitol Hill, the House is ready to transfer operations to Fort McNair at a moment’s notice, according to lawmakers and staffers involved in the project. Officials have secured podiums, rostrums, televisions, cameras, audio equipment and phone lines so that the undisclosed building at the installation in southwest Washington would resemble the House floor. "We tested our plans, and now know that we have a system that works," said Rep. J.C. Watts Jr., R-Okla., in Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper. The project is in motion, but nothing definite has been decided, said Jennifer Lafley, public communications team chief for the Military District of Washington. "We have the capacity to work with them, but we haven’t actually signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) just yet," she said. This would be the first time Congress used Fort McNair to take up legislation. Officials and lawmakers decided on Fort McNair because it provided the meeting space and the additional office space on a military compound already fortified with gates and military police.
