Rangers Have History of Being First: Army Rangers, the elite forces who went into action Friday night in Afghanistan, are considered the top light infantry troops of the Army. They pledge to "move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier," according to the Ranger Creed. Their mission is to be the quick-strike unit that goes in first against an enemy, directs fire from support aircraft and conducts lightning raids under all conditions to seize airfields and other targets. They are trained to fight outnumbered in hostile terrain, which experts have said makes them well-suited for the terrorist-hunting missions of a new era of American military conflict. |
