General Info: Postal clerks operate the Navy postal system. Their work is very much like that of civilians who work for the U.S. Postal Service. PCs distribute all official and personal mail in the Navy's postal system. They also compute financial reports and learn accounting, material distribution and transportation skills. What They Do: The duties performed by PCs include: organizing and operating Navy post offices, ashore or afloat; supervising and training personnel; making sure various types of mail have been properly marked and sorted; performing a variety of counter operations similiar to those performed in United States Postal Service offices, such as selling stamps, handling money orders, preparing claims, tracers and inquiries; processing and dispatching mail; maintaining postal equipment; preparing postal records and reports; requisitioning and controlling postal supplies and equipment; maintaining security for registered, certified and other special classes of mail; operating typewriters, adding machines, weighing machines (scales) and various other machines and meters; directing and facilitating routing and transportation of mail; inspecting Navy post offices and taking steps to maintain or improve efficiency. Detailed List of Required Duties ASVAB Score Requirements: VE+AR=107 Other Requirements: Security Clearance (SECRET) Requirement. Must be U.S. citizen. Notes: High school diploma graduate or equivalent with successful completion of 10th grade. Valid driver's license required. Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling.
Basic skills required for rating Individualized instruction. After "A" school, postal clerks are assigned to postal duties aboard ship or at shore stations overseas. During a 20-year period in the Navy, PCs spend about 60 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 40 percent to shore stations. Working Environment: Postal Clerks handle mail on aircraft carrier flight decks, in Fleet Mail Unit loading areas, in shipboard post offices and deliver mail via truck on most stateside naval bases. PCs work aboard almost every ship and shore station in the Navy. The work is physical, but the range of jobs allows people to learn financial and customer service skills. Opportunity Rating:
