General Info: Lithographers run Navy print shops and are responsible for the production of printed material used by the Navy, such as magazines, newspapers, forms and training materials. LI is a highly technical rating.

What They Do: The duties performed by LIs include: designing layouts; setting type, making plates, and producing and stripping negatives for printing; performing graphic reproduction with lithographic equipment; operating computer-based desktop publishing systems; operating process camera and darkroom equipment; operating printing presses; binding and collating printing products; repairing offset presses, duplicators, film process cameras and bindery equipment.

Other Requirements: Security Clearance (SECRET) Requirement. Must be U.S. citizen.

Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling. Advanced technical and operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.

After "A" school lithographers are assigned to shore stations or tenders or other large ships where lithography or letterpress printing is done. During a 20-year period in the Navy, LIs usually spend 55 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 45 percent to shore stations.

Working Environment: Navy lithographers work in a print-shop environment both aboard ship and at shore bases. The work is mentally challenging as well as physically demanding. LIs work independently on jobs interacting often with fellow lithographers in the shop.
