General Info: HT's (USN and TAR) do the metal work necessary to keep all types of shipboard structures and surfaces in good condition. They also maintain shipboard plumbing and marine sanitation systems, repair small boats, operate and maintain ballast control systems, and manage the Quality Assurance Program. Active duty obligation is six years. Applicants will enlist for four years and concurrently execute an agreement to extend their enlistment for 24 months. Enlistee enters as an E-1 (Fireman recruit). Advancement to E-2 (Fireman Recruit) will be made after successful completion of recruit training. Advancement to paygrade E-3 (Fireman) will be made after completions of all advancement-in-rate requirements (including minimum time in rate) are completed. Advancement to E-3 and E-4 is contingent upon maintaining eligibility in the Advanced Technical Field.

What They Do: The duties performed by HT ATF's include: installing, maintaining and repairing valves, piping, plumbing system fittings and fixtures, and marine sanitation systems. repairing decks, structures and hulls by welding, brazing, riveting and caulking; examining, testing welds and various shipboard structures; using radiological, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing equipment. fabricating with light and heavy gauge metal such as aluminum, stainless steel, sheet copper and brass, steel, sheet and corrugated iron; heat treating, hot and cold forming of metals; pipe cutting, threading and assembly; repairing installed ventilation ducting; repairing metal, wood and fiberglass boats; installing and repairing insulation and lagging; operating marine sanitation systems

Detailed List of Required Duties

ASVAB Score Requirements: AR+MK+EI+GS=213

Other Requirements: Must have normal color perception. Must have normal hearing. Security Clearance (SECRET) Requirement. 72 month obligation. Must be U.S. citizen.

Notes: Normal hearing required. Frequencies: 3000hz 4000hz 5000hz 6000hz Average hearing threshold level in these four frequencies must be less than 30db, with no level greater than 45db in any one frequency. If hearing level exceeds these limits, the applicant is enlistment ineligible for the rating.

High school diploma graduate or equivalent. Must be able to type 40 words per minute. Must have no record of conviction by civil court for any offense other than minor traffic.

Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling. Advanced training is available in this during the later stages of career development.

Engineering Common Core Great Lakes, IL 19 days

Introduction to technical documentation, basic mechanical theory, safety precautions and programs, alignment and operation of piping systems and equipment, hand tools, precision instruments, lubricants, bearings, couplings, gears, valves, pumps and the Maintenance Material Management System (3M) Group instruction and practical application

Hull Technician Class "A" School Great Lakes, IL 54 days

Indoctrination, drafting, mathematics, angular line development, fundamentals of blueprint reading, Quality Assurance, hand tools, Sheetmetal work, knowledge and comprehension of welding, brazing, pipefitting, and cutting, metal identification, knowledge and comprehension of piping systems and measurements, shop safety, knowledge and comprehension of shipboard sanitation systems Individualized and group instruction

After completion of "A" school, USN HT's are assigned to ships of all types or shore stations in the United States or overseas. In a typical 20-year period in the Navy, HT's spend about 50 percent of their time on sea duty and about 50 percent on shore duty. TAR HT's are assigned to NRF ships in CONUS, not overseas. Upon completion of sea tours, TAR HT's will be assigned to Naval Reserve Centers across the country including the heartland. While assigned to a reserve center TAR HT's will train and administer Selected Reserve Personnel.

Working Environment: Hull Technicians work in a variety of situations at sea and ashore. Sometimes their work is performed indoors in a shop environment. Other times it may be performed outdoors, frequently at sea and in all kinds of climates and weather conditions. They may work in noisy environments on some assignments. USN HT's are stationed primarily aboard USN deploying ships, TAR HT's are stationed aboard Naval Reserve Force (NRF) ships that deploy or conduct local operations.
