| MOS 8538, Substance Abuse Counselor | |||||||||||||||||||
Summary. Substance abuse counselors perform duties in command substance abuse counseling centers or at Navy substance abuse treatment facilities (Alcohol Rehabilitation Department (ARD), or Alcohol Rehabilitation Center). Requirements/Prerequisites (1) Express a desire and willingness to perform required duties and tasks. (2) Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent with the ability to participate in college-level substance abuse courses. Possess required GT. The individual must possess above average Verbal skills and demonstrated maturity. (3) No indication of psychosis, neurosis, and character/ behavioral disorder as determined by a Navy psychiatrist or Navy psychologist. (4) Interviewed and recommended by a Substance Abuse Counselor (MOS 8538) or a graduate of an approved military counselor Training course. (5) Recommendation of individual's commanding officer. (6) Complete an approved military counselor training course followed by a minimum of 1 year experience in duties as a substance abuse counselor. (7) This MOS will be assigned and voided only by the authority of the CMC (MHH). Duties (1) MGySgt to Sgt: (a) Conducts and supervises all phases of substance abuse counseling programs at major commands or assists in conducting and supervising treatment at an ARC/ARD. (b) Conducts or assists in conducting individual and group counseling sessions. (c) Plans, organizes, and presents substance abuse education and training programs. (d) Assists in the identification of substance abusers and intake evaluation for treatment of a substance dependent individual. (e) Screens identified substance abusers to determine if individuals should be returned to duty, assigned to local command substance abuse education program, or assigned to a formal treatment program. (f) Supervises and trains prospective substance abuse counselors and other Marines assigned to substance abuse billets. Related DOT Classification/DOT Code.
