Summary. Small arms weapons instructor conducts all phases of the Marine Corps Marksmanship training. They Develop comprehensive marksmanship training plan based on commanders guidance. They conduct and supervise all small arms marksmanship training evolutions in support of unit mission.

Requirements/Prerequisites

(1) Must have previously held MOS 8531.

(2) Complete the formal course of instruction given at Weapons Training Battalion, MCCDC, Quantico, VA.

(3) To be assigned only as a secondary MOS or as a billet designator.

Duties

(1) MGySgt to Sgt:

(a) Supervises and instructs fundamental marksmanship skills of the service rifle, pistol, shotgun, MP5, M203, M14, AK-47, M1911A1, and the squad automatic weapon (SAW) to include:

1 Preparatory training.

2 Weapons handling.

3 Preventive maintenance.

4 Grouping.

5 Zeroing.

6 Engage stationary targets at known distances.

7 Engage targets of limited time exposure.

8 Low light shooting techniques.

9 Multiple target engagement.

10 Moving target engagement.

11 Fire and movement techniques.

(b) Instructs in and enforces firing safety regulations; maintains range discipline over assigned areas.

(c) Analyzes difficulties of firers during dry and live fire exercises and provides corrective assistance to individuals to improve their marksmanship skill and confidence.

(d) Develops a surface danger zone (SDZ) for a small arms range, to include factors such as firing points, impact areas, safety limits, communications, ammunition storage, and target location.

(e) Performs duties of the range safety officer on any live fire range as authorized by MCO 3570.2A, Chapter 1, Table 1-1.

(f) Supervises, conducts, maintains and has working knowledge of pertinent safety, range operation, marksmanship, and weapons manuals, orders, and regulations.

(g) Assists in the planning and conduct of courses of instruction for range coaches and range operations personnel.

(h) Evaluates and reports to the commander individual and unit proficiency in marksmanship.
