Summary.
Radar approach controllers perform duties within a radar facility incident
to the control of aircraft at an established air traffic traffic control
or expeditionary airfield, maintaining radar surveillance of approach
control airspace, processing and coordinating aircraft passing through
the terminal control area entering arrival/departure control airspace.
This MOS may be assigned as a skill designator MOS only.
Requirements/Prerequisites
(1) Must
be an MOS 7251/7257.
(2) Must meet the
physical requirements per NAVMEDS P-117, chapter 15, article 65, para
7(W), and pass a medical examination.
(3) Must possess
normal color vision.
(4) Qualify as a
radar approach controller.
(5) Must
have a secret security
clearance.
(6) Possess a valid
air traffic control specialist certificate.
Duties
(1) Maintains radar
surveillance of assigned area and provides radar service to aircraft as
required.
(2) Coordinates and
controls the movement of instrument air traffic within the air traffic
control area of responsibility.
(3) Determines the
interval to be used between the instrument traffic involved in successive
approaches and/or departures plus any enroute instrument traffic taking
into consideration all aspects of the air traffic situation, reliability
and adequacy of communication, reliability of navigational and other approach
aids, types of aircraft under control, weather, runway in use, and all
other factors that may affect air traffic operations.
(4) Originates and
reviews standard instrument approach and departure procedures.
(5) Provides technical
assistance within the air traffic control activity or to outside agencies.
