National Guard May Be Used to Help D.C. Police: Capitol Police officer Adam Weiss was midway through another 12-hour shift in a six-day week yesterday morning, walking back and forth at C and Third streets NE, turning back delivery trucks from the street that approaches the Hart Senate Office Building. Weiss's marathon shifts have become customary for the 1,200-member uniformed force since Sept. 11, part of the attempt to keep the nation's legislative business safe amid terrorist threats and anthrax-laden envelopes. "I don't mind the time, but what hurts is that I don't get to see my wife and 4-month-old son," Weiss said. "But that's how it is for now. This is game day." He may get some relief, though, because House and Senate leaders are discussing using about 100 National Guard troops to bolster the Capitol's police force, a step that has often been taken to protect one of the nation's most sensitive landmarks in times of war and crisis. |
