Flag Order of Precedence:

When foreign troops are invited to participate in a ceremony within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, they are assigned a position of honor ahead of the US troops, except for a small US detachment, which immediately precedes the foreign troops as a guard of honor.


Troops of the US Armed Forces are positioned in the following order of precedence:

  • Cadets, US Military Academy.
  • Midshipmen, US Naval Academy.
  • Cadets, US Air Force Academy (USAFA).
  • Cadets, US Coast Guard Academy.
  • Midshipmen, US Merchant Marine Academy.
  • US Army.
  • US Marine Corps.
  • US Navy.
  • US Air Force.
  • US Coast Guard.
  • Army National Guard of the US.
  • US Army Reserve.
  • US Marine Corps Reserve.
  • US Naval Reserve.
  • Air National Guard of the US.
  • US Air Force Reserve.
  • US Coast Guard Reserve.
  • Other training organizations of the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, and US Coast Guard, in that order.
  • When the US Coast Guard operates as part of the US Navy, the Cadets, US Coast Guard Academy; US Coast Guard; and US Coast Guard Reserve precede the Midshipmen, US Naval Academy; US Navy; and US Naval Reserve, respectively.
  • Troops of the US Air Force are positioned as follows: officers, USAFA cadets, Officer Training School (OTS) students, and airmen.
