Note: Effective March 15, 2007, the Air Force eliminated privately owned vehicle registration requirements, and use of decals on POVs at most Air Force Installations. For details, see Vehicle Decals no Longer Required on Air Force Bases.

Personnel authorized to drive on military installations are issued a Department of Defense Vehicle Registration Decal, the DD Form 2220, DOD Registered Vehicle Decal, to register their vehicle on the military installation they are assigned to (closest military installation for retirees).

To register a vehicle, and receive the decal, one must provide the vehicle registration and proof of insurance with minimum liability insurance required by the state where the military installation is located.

In the Air Force, the name of the installation is also added on a color-coded decal, placed immediately below the DD Form 2220 decal. The color codes are:

Officer blue background with white letters.
Noncommissioned officer (E-5 and above) gold background with black letters.
Airman (E-4 and below) red background with white letters.
Civilian green background with white letters.
Contractor white background with black letters.

NOTE: The installation commander determines the color code used by dependents of deceased military members.
