description. Responsible for the tactical employment,
command and control, and the airspace management of both gun and
missile units of Air Defense Artillery. Directs the technical and
tactical operations, as well as the engagement techniques used by
the various systems. Coordinates and provides the expertise at all
levels of command and develops the doctrine and plans essential
to the successful use of Air Defense Artillery weapons in support
of airland combat operations and defense against enemy aircraft
and missile attacks. Develops organizational and operational concepts
for future Air Defense systems. Directs training, administration,
communications, supply, maintenance, transportation and security
activities of ADA units.
Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for entry and professional development in this branch. Air Defense Artillery, General (14A). Description of duties. Senior ADA Commander, liaison officer or staff officer in positions which require general Air Defense knowledge/experience, but are not related to a specific Air Defense weapons system. Special qualifications. Qualified in one or more of the other areas of concentration within Air Defense. Special grading of positions. (a) AD Coordination/Management Officer graded MAJ in command section of Aviation Brigade, Group and Regiment. (b) Asst ADA/Airspace Officer graded CPT in ADA Element of Aviation Brigade, Group and Regiment. Unique duty positions. None. Short-Range Air Defense Artillery (SHORAD) (14B). (closed to women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-7) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of short-range Air Defense Artillery units. Plans, coordinates and directs employment of gun systems and/or surface to air missile systems and their associated command and control system. Systems include Duster ARNG, VULCAN, CHAPARRAL, ROLAND ARNG, REDEYE and STINGER, which are employed to protect maneuver units and key installations from attack by low flying hostile aircraft. Serves as the Air Defense Staff Officer at battalion, brigade, division and higher headquarters. Special qualifications. Requires completion of appropriate resident training at the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH). Special grading of positions. None. Unique duty positions. None. HAWK Missile Air Defense Artillery (14D). Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of a HAWK Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates, and directs employment of HAWK units and their associated command and control system to counter the threat of high performance air-craft, cruise missiles and helicopters at low and medium altitudes. Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff Officer at Corps and Echelons Above Corps. Special qualifications. Requires completion of appropriate resident training at the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH). Certain advisory positions require appropriate language qualification/training. Special grading of positions. None. Unique duty positions. None. PATRIOT Missile Air Defense Artillery (14E). Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of a PATRIOT Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates and directs employment of PATRIOT units and their associated command and control system to counter the threat of all altitude hostile high-performance all weather aircraft attempting penetration of the defended area. Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff Officer at Echelons Above Corps (EAC). Special qualifications.
