United States Army
Basic Training Operating Instructions

Uniforms

1.  References:  1 ATB Policy Memo #III2, and #3

2.  Drill Sergeants are authorized to wear their campaign hat in any event in which the BDU cap would normally be worn.

3.  Drill Sergeants are not authorized to wear their Campaign Hats inside buildings.

4.  Rule of thumb is Campaign Hat in garrison, kevlar helmet (with reflective band) and LBE in the field.  When the commander is in kevlar, the cadre should be in kevlar.

5.  Cadre are in the same PT uniform as the soldiers except that cadre will wear a reflective belt for safety and to distinguish them from trainees while running.  No distinctive hats or shirts will be worn by cadre as part of the PT uniform.

6.  BDU blouses are always worn outside of the building for details or any other reason by trainees or cadre.

7.  Specific uniform guidance:

Note: These Operating Instructions were derived from a set of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for a United States Army Infantry Basic Training Battalion. While SOPs might differ somewhat from batallion to batallion, it should give a basic idea of the instructions that Drill Sergeants and basic training staff members operate under.
