Basic Training Operating Instructions

Range Procedures

1.  Reference:  MFR Live Fire Training Policies, ATZK-PTR, 8 AUG 90; USAARMC 385-22

2.  All privates will receive a safety briefing and instruction prior to any range.  This will usually be done by committee cadre.

3.  Cadre will also receive a safety briefing from the committee on site prior to any range and discuss the sequence of events and responsibilites.  Every range has its own requirements.

4.  The duty platoon provides the Range Safety Officer (must have Range Safety Card on file) who will prepare a detailed plan including who will man each position on the line, reliefs, Reporting NCO/Aidman, retraining and concurrent training, chow and quality control.

5.  Drill sergeants will rod all weapons twice before entering the range and twice before exiting the range.  Privates will report, “No brass, no ammo, drill sergeant.”

6.  Chamber blocks will be used at all ranges until Ditto I and II.

7.  Drill Sergeants will check all privates for brass or ammo prior to leaving the range and before they have access to their rucksacks.

8.  There will be no running on any ranges; only range walk.  PT can be conducted on the range, but it must occur behind the firing line and not pose a safety risk.

9.  The Reporting NCO will bring two copies of the company alpha roster to record scores.

10.  The Aidman will, as a minimum, have:

            a.  Reporting Book with:

                        (1)  Complete Risk Assessment and Unit Status Report

                        (2)  Combat Lifesaver Card

                        (3)  Range Card

            b.  Strip map with location of training site and quickest ground route to hospital

            c.  Copy of the TSPs and FMs

            d.  Safety Binder

            e.  FLA (or other dedicated, litter-bearing vehicle) with:

                        (1)  2 litters and 2 sets of linen

                        (2)  Spill kit

                        (3)  A properly loaded Combat Lifesaver Bag and First Aid Box

                        (4)  Water, at least 5 gallons

                        (5)  Proper dispatch with 2404 and additional operator signed

                        (6)  Red smoke located in right rear of FLA next to litter

                        (7)  Ice in an orange GOTT cooler to reduce swelling

                        (8)  Range box with toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags

                        (9)  Wet Bulb, yellow GTA (FKG 8-9-0), & guidance on consumption of water (from Countermeasures Magazine)

                        (10)  FM communications with Range Control.

11.  Details of the ranges and their requirements are in Appendix 1.

12.  Check latrines and report condition to 3-81 S-3 (4-3476).

Note: These Operating Instructions were derived from a set of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for a United States Army Infantry Basic Training Battalion. While SOPs might differ somewhat from batallion to batallion, it should give a basic idea of the instructions that Drill Sergeants and basic training staff members operate under.
