United States Army
Basic Training Operating Instructions
Operation Appreciation
1. OPERATION APPRECIATION is sponsored by the Chaplain’s office and Louisville area churches. It is an opportunity for the privates to spend some time in Louisville in a relaxed environment without drill sergeant supervision.
2. This event is optional and the cost is $6 per private to pay for the transportation during the event.
3. Drill Sergeants should NEVER handle this money. The money should be collected by the soldier leaders and turned in to the 1SG who will count the money in front of the soldier leader and the drill sergeant. The 1SG will then turn the money over to the Chaplain’s office along with the list of those attending.
4. OPERATION APPRECIATION is held on a Saturday evening, usually the week after M16 qualification.
a. The privates will depart and return by bus from the Cavalry Chapel from 1800 - 2300. They are accompanied by the battalion chaplain and the chaplain’s assistant (no drill sergeants required).
b. Plan on privates arriving at the chapel at 1745 after the supper meal. Privates will be fed by the church as well.
5. THIS EVENT IS NOT MANDATORY, HELD IN A CHURCH AND IS RELIGIOUS IN NATURE. This event is a privilege. NO refunds.
Note: These Operating Instructions were derived from a set of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for a United States Army Infantry Basic Training Battalion. While SOPs might differ somewhat from batallion to batallion, it should give a basic idea of the instructions that Drill Sergeants and basic training staff members operate under.
