2E8X1 - INSTRUMENTATION AND TELEMETRY SYSTEMS

Specialty Summary Performs and manages design support, installation, calibration, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation and telemetry facilities, systems, equipment, and related subsystems. Monitors, analyzes, and directs performance checks and measurements of instrumentation and telemetry systems to ensure acceptable performance. Related DoD Occupational Subgroup: 122.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Directs, plans, and organizes instrumentation and telemetry activities. Provides technical and design support assistance, solves problems for test site and operation, and maintenance functions. Ensures compliance with policies, directives, and regulations. Establishes requirements for tools, equipment, and technical documents. Establishes work standards, methods, and controls for functions such as periodic inspections, operational testing, and component repair. Evaluates and resolves deficiencies. Evaluates and recommends changes to improve equipment performance or maintenance practices. Analyzes report findings and recommends corrective action. Serves on or directs inspection teams in evaluating instrumentation and telemetry systems operations and maintenance activities. Determines extent and economy of repair, including disposition of malfunctioning equipment. Develops and enforces safety rules. Coordinates with using organizations to ensure adequate services are being provided.

Assembles, installs, and operates instrumentation and telemetry systems. Unpacks, checks, assembles, and installs instrumentation and telemetry equipment used to measure performance of munitions, aircraft, missiles, satellites, spacecraft, biomedical, laser systems, and hardened missile sites. Inspects completed assemblies during all phases of static and dynamic testing. Operates instrumentation and telemetry systems comprised of components such as transmitters, recorders, computers, and data conditioning and conversion equipment.

Repairs, overhauls, modifies, and maintains instrumentation and telemetry systems. Uses schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams to analyze and isolate system malfunctions. Repairs standard instrumentation, telemetry components, and special equipment. Checks and adjusts instrumentation systems, and synchronizes with other test control systems. Resolves problems installing, operating, maintaining, repairing, isolating malfunctions, and modifying instrumentation and telemetry systems and equipment. Troubleshoots, calibrates, and repairs instrumentation and telemetry systems comprised of components such as transmitters, recorders, computers, and data conditioning and conversion equipment. Disassembles and repairs radar, television, airborne and ground analog and digital telemetry, laser, and timing device components, and other special equipment used for research and development projects. Analyzes equipment limitations, and modifies equipment to increase operational efficiency for specific missions. Reassembles components and calibrates, aligns, and adjusts completed assemblies. Accomplishes tolerance and specification tests, and records and repairs recurring malfunctions.

Inspects instrumentation and telemetry systems to determine performance. Analyzes data to detect deficiencies. Inspects, adjusts, and aligns instrumentation and telemetry equipment to secure maximum operating efficiency.

Maintains inspection and maintenance records. Posts entries on maintenance and inspection records. Records information in equipment performance logs.

Specialty Qualifications:

Knowledge. Knowledge is mandatory of: application of electronics theory to instrumentation and telemetry systems, including solid state components and digital techniques; use of test equipment; application of mathematics, including algebraic formulas and physics to instrumentation and telemetry systems; interpretation of schematic diagrams, blueprints, wiring diagrams; Air Force supply procedures; resource protection; and funds management.

Education. For entry into this specialty, completion of high school with courses in mathematics and physics is desirable.

Training. Completion of the following training is mandatory for award of the AFSC indicated:

2E831. A basic instrumentation and telemetry systems course.

23871. The communications-electronics career advancement course.

Experience. The following experience is mandatory for award of the AFSC indicated:

2E851. Qualification in and possession of AFSC 2E831. Also, experience in functions such as assembly, installation, repair, modification, and operation of instrumentation and telemetry systems; adjusting and calibrating instrumentation components; replacing defective parts; or repairing faulty components.

2E871. Qualification in and possession of AFSC 2E8X1. Also, experience in performing or supervising functions such as: assembly, installation, repair, modification, and operation of instrumentation and telemetry systems; repairing test equipment; adjusting and calibrating instrumentation components; replacing defective parts; or repairing faulty components.

2E891. Qualification in and possession of AFSC 2E871. Also, experience directing functions such as inspecting, assembling, installing, modifying, operation, and maintenance of instrumentation and telemetry systems and equipment.

Other. The following are mandatory as indicated:

For entry into this specialty, normal color vision as defined in AFI 48-123, Medical Examination and Standards.

For award and retention of AFSCs 2E831/51/71/91/00, eligibility for a Secret security clearance according to AFI 31-501, Personnel Security Program Management.
