The NCO gets in the van and drives your group to the airport. You unload your bags and the NCO takes care of getting everyone checked onto the flight.

Everyone boards the flight okay, and the NCO shakes your hand and wishes you good luck as you enter the line to board the aircraft. You take a quick headcount, and note that all of your "troops" are in line in front of you. You're kind of proud of yourself, even though it was the MEPS NCO who really took care of everything.

Be that as it may, the MEPS NCO is not with you any longer, and you really are on your own, "in charge" of your troops. Just like Patton. Just like McCarthy.

While you are busy re-fighting World War II in your mind, basking in the glory of "command," the big kid leans over from across the aircraft isle and throws a peanut at you.

After a two hour flight, the aircraft settles into the Denver International Airport and taxis to the gate. After you deplane, you gather up your "troops."

"Okay guys," you say, "We've only got an hour until our next flight to Boondock Airport. Let's stick together and head for the next gate."

"Up Yours," the Big Kid says. "I'm going to take a look around. I'll see you clowns at the gate." The big kid then turns on his heels and proceeds to walk away.
