Initial Training Overview: Job training for a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator consists of nine weeks of Basic Training and 4 to 12 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Exact length of training depends on specific construction equipment at first duty assignment.

Restrictions: During Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), the Army limits a soldier's personal freedom, using a "Phase System," which grants increased freedom, based upon phase of training. For details, see Army Training Phase Restrictions.
Training Details: Basic course is Five weeks, three days, of MOS specific training consisting of operating techniques and operator level maintenance of the 5 ton dump truck, M915 tractor with semi trailer, 25 ton crane, piledriver, and clamshell. Following the basic course, other equipment operator courses may be attended, depending on the requirements of the first duty station. Other subjects taught during the course include: installing and removing crane booms, extensions and hook blocks, positioning crane outriggers and assemblies and maneuvers in response to hand signals, iInstalling, rigging and removing crane attachments, performing clamshell, dragline, wrecking ball, pile driving and hook block operations, determining safe lifting capacities, assisting in the performance of combat engineer missions, and lifting and moving steel and other heavy building materials using winches, cranes, and hoists.
