Preparing for Air Force Basic Training

Dorm Guard

By Rod Powers, About.com

In basic training, you'll often perform a duty called "Dorm Guard." Every one in the military is responsible for the safety and security of equipment and people assigned to them. In order for you to become familiar with this responsibility and importance you will have to perform dorm guard duty during basic training. You will be responsible for the safety and security of the people and valuables in the dormitory. The following information will give you detailed instructions on how this duty is accomplished. Note: Every effort has been made to ensure the following information is up-to-date. However, as "Dorm Guard" is a local Lackland AFB, Basic Training procedure, and not an Air Force Wide requirement, it is subject to change without notice. The below information is provided to give you a general overview only. Specific instructions on the CURRENT procedures will be provided to you by your Military Training Instructor (MTI).

General Instructions

All dorm guards must follow specific rules whenever on duty. These rules include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • NEVER sit, sleep, write letters, or read any material other than your Basic Military Training Manual (BMTM) and class notes.
  • Write down all messages to be passed on to the flight, next dorm guard, or MTI.
  • One of the primary ways you receive messages is over the intercom:
    • If you receive a message over the intercom answer with the following statement: "Sir/Ma'am, Dorm Guard, Dorm _____, May I help you?"
  • Along with writing down messages, also write down the details of any unusual occurrences and brief the instructor and your dorm guard relief.
  • Failure to report all unusual occurrences and violations may result in disciplinary action. If you observe trainees breaking rules and fail to report it in a timely manner, you will be held accountable.
  • The dorm guard is responsible for opening and closing the door for normal entry/exit.
  • Airmen scheduled for dorm guard during lights out have the following responsibilities:
    • They must have an operational flashlight.
    • Leave a properly filled out AETC Form 341 centered, printing up, on your chair.
    • You do not make your bed between lights out and first call.
    • They must set up the night display properly before and after performing dorm guard. However, if you are relieved at 0430 on a duty day, you do not have to go back to bed.
  • While on dorm guard duty you must:
    • Accomplish all required checks and form entries in the log.
    • Remain at the dorm guard stand unless you are performing hourly checks or as otherwise instructed.

Duty Schedule

The flight's dorm guard monitor schedules all members of the flight for two-hour shifts, but never consecutive shifts. During lights out two qualified dorm guards are scheduled per shift. (Exception: 0 and 1st week, the second dorm guard is an experienced recruit from another flight. This is called an "OJT Dorm Guard.")

If taking prescription medication, tell your MTI, dorm guard monitor, or dorm chief before assuming duty (medication could cause drowsiness, which would interfere with the proper performance of duty).

Airmen placed on a medical waiver may perform dorm guard unless the waiver states otherwise. Show the waiver to your instructor for a briefing on restrictions listed on the waiver.

Contact your dorm guard monitor, dorm chief, or MTI for any necessary changes. DO NOT change the schedule yourself.

If you are not relived at the end of your shift, stay at your post:

  • Notify the instructor if available, or send a runner to notify the orderly room personnel.
  • If alone and a reasonable amount of time has passed, use the intercom to notify the orderly room.

Uniform Requirements

When scheduled for dorm guard your uniform requirements are:

  • From 0630 hrs (6:30 AM) until 2030 hrs (8:30 PM) you wear the duty uniform and the show of the day. In the sixth week of training the uniform of the day is blue service uniform unless otherwise instructed.
  • From 2030 hours until 0630 hours you wear BDUs and combat boots.
  • When flight is scheduled for PC, you may wear PC gear for the 0430 shift. NOTE: 0630-0830 dorm guard may wear PC gear, if scheduled.
The dorm guard must have the following equipment:
  • Wear the appropriate hat and web belt.
  • You must ALWAYS have your BMTM, notebook, and pen with you.
  • During hours of darkness bring your flashlight.
