Air Force Adds Computer Networking Career Field

By November 28, 2010

Follow me on:

The Air Force has added a new career field for enlisted airmen who have a knack with computer networks, according to an Air Force Times article.

The career field, 1B4X1, is the only enlisted specialty in the Air Force dedicated to cyberspace operations, according to Air Force Space Command, though there are other specialties that provide cyberspace support. The career field is a retrain-in-only specialty (not available to new recruits), and the Air Force is looking for airmen who have "demonstrated ability and possess the right aptitude" for this kind of work, according to Space Command.

I have a friend who attended a cyberspace course while in ROTC so I have heard about this before and I think it is really great that we are focusing on training our troops to specialize in cyberspace operations. In the AF Times article, it has the title as a “new type of warrior” and I think this is exactly what this training will do, it will create a new type of warrior to our fight.
