A law that makes it illegal to lie about being a war hero is unconstitutional because it violates free speech, a federal judge ruled Friday as he dismissed a case against a Colorado man who claimed he received two military medals. This story was detailed in a recent Army Times article.
Rick Glen Strandlof claimed he was an ex-Marine who was wounded in Iraq and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star, but the military had no record he ever served. He was charged with violating the Stolen Valor Act, which makes it a crime punishable by up to a year in jail to falsely claim to have won a military medal. U.S. District Judge Robert Blackburn dismissed the case and said the law is unconstitutional, ruling the government did not show it has a compelling reason to restrict that type of statement.
How sad that anyone would be sick enough to lie about recieving any honors, let alone that nothing can be done about it.
Living in Florida has taught me that when you want to know who someone is, you have to ask for ALL of their ID’s. Must be the sign of the times when everyone is forced to wonder what the truth is about anyone they may meet nowadays.

These are all wannabes who never had the guts to venture beyond their comfort zones. While they may escape punishment prescribed by law, they will forever be punished in the knowledge that they are yellow cowards. It is extremely unfortunate, however, that their loved ones will share in this knowledge.

let’s see….. the SVA makes it illegal to simply say, “i got a purple heart” it doesn’t matter who you said it to, or why. You could say it to a 3yo and you could go to jail, and have a criminal record over that…. this law is BS the way it stands….

Now if the person told someone or place that he or she got a purple heart, so that they could get money. That would constitute fraud. “”"Not simply just saying it”"”"….
it needs to be reworded, so that it says the claim has to have caused a monetary loss…. Like in all other fraud laws….
THE WAY IT IS NOW VIOLATES THE 1ST AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTUTUTION… AND THE JUDGE WAS RIGHT IN HIS DESISION… and all previous, and pending cases need to be sent back to court, or be ruled on the same way……..
